About Carpathian Society of Transylvania

The Carpathian Society of Transylvania (in Hungarian: EKE) was established on May 12, 1891 in Cluj. Nowadays it has 16 member organizations all over Transylvania. The number of its members reached almost 2000, thus it is the biggest touristic organization in Romania.

With the help of its member organizations, EKE organizes trips each week, visiting again and again not only the wonderful Transylvanian sights, but also the places of high touristical interest from other countries. When participating in a historical trip, we explore the important stones of the Hungarian and universal history. Ski camps, contests, tourist guiding, touristical sign marking, performance tours, orientation races make more attractive our yearly program, which can be found on our homepage. We are partners in marking and building the Maria Road, which starts at Mariazell (Austria) and ends at Csíksomlyó (Sumuleu Ciuc), but we also participate in different local programs.

The biggest event of EKE is the summer camp, which is organized each year since 1992 by a different EKE-member organization. The goal of the camp is to gather the tourists mainly from Transylvania and Hungary beneath a huge “tent”, for a one week period.

The journal of EKE, the Edelweiss of Transylvania (Erdélyi Gyopár) – the successor of the Transylvania (Erdély) journal published between 1892 and 1948 – is the only Hungarian publication in Transylvania dealing with tourism, knowledge of our country and protection of nature. It has 6 issues in a year.
